Golf Simulator Room Size Checker Will a Golf Simulator Fit in My Room?

Most full simulator bays need a 10 foot ceiling, 12 feet of width and 16 feet of depth. A compact setup can work from 9 by 10.5 by 14 feet. Set the sliders to your room to see it in 3D, then copy the measurements into the request form below with one click.

How much space do you need?

Three measurements decide most rooms. Here is how our designers read each one.

Ceiling height

Plan on 10 feet for a full swing with a driver. Nine feet works for many players, and anything lower needs a closer look.

The club passes over your head at the top of the backswing and again on the follow-through. For most adults that arc tops out somewhere between 9 and 10 feet, so the tallest golfer in the house sets the number.

Measure from the floor you will stand on to the lowest thing overhead in the swing area. Beams, ductwork, soffits, light fixtures and garage door tracks all count. A turf platform or hitting mat raises the golfer an inch or more, so subtract that too.

Overhead launch monitors such as the Foresight Falcon mount on the ceiling above the hitting area and have their own height range, which we check against your room.

Room width

Twelve feet lets us center the hitting area so right-handed and left-handed players can both swing. About 10.5 feet works for one side only.

A golfer needs roughly 5 feet of clear space to each side of the ball, plus room for padding on the side walls. In a narrow room we offset the hitting area toward one wall, which works when everyone in the house swings the same way.

Wider rooms of 14 to 16 feet allow a larger screen in a wider format and space for seating or a bar beside the bay.

Room depth

Sixteen feet from the screen wall to the back wall gives a comfortable layout. Fourteen feet works with a compact setup.

Depth covers three things: the distance from the ball to the screen (about 10 feet is comfortable, 8 feet is the practical minimum), the space behind the ball for the golfer's swing, and room for the launch monitor and projector.

Camera-based launch monitors such as Foresight's sit beside the ball and need the least depth. Floor-standing radar units such as TrackMan 4 sit several feet behind the golfer, so those rooms usually need 18 feet or more in total.

What else we check

A room can pass all three numbers and still need planning. On the site visit we look at:

  • Doors, windows and stairs in the hitting area or on the screen wall
  • Posts, columns, radiators or baseboard heat inside the swing zone
  • Garage door tracks and openers, which can often be moved to a side-mounted opener
  • A sloped or uneven floor, common in garages
  • Where the projector can mount and how far it needs to sit from the screen
  • Power, network and air flow for the PC and projector

Short on space? A Murphy golf simulator folds away when you are done, and our technology guide explains which launch monitors suit smaller rooms.

Room size questions

Nine feet is the practical minimum for most adult golfers to swing a driver, and 10 feet is comfortable. Taller players, or anyone with an upright swing, may need more. Measure to the lowest point in the swing area, including beams, ducts and light fixtures.
